Why This Trade Makes Sense For The New York Knicks
The biggest reason why this trade makes sense for the New York Knicks is because they need something to build with. R.J. Barrett and Obi Toppin seem to be two promising young players, but no All-Star is going to give up their current situation to play with two unproven players. This is why bringing in a guy like Spencer Dinwiddie to lay the foundation is extremely important.
Having Spencer Dinwiddie be the leader of the team for now and help them win games proves to other big name players around the league that the Knicks are finally legit and as a result, New York could land a couple All-Star caliber players via trade or next offseason in free agency. As it stands right now, the Knicks will have about $50M to spend in free agency and if they waive Julius Randle, they would have over $70M to play around with!
DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry, Andre Drummond, Victor Oladipo and LaMarcus Aldridge are all current and former All-Star level talents that will be unrestricted free agents next year and potential targets of the New York Knicks. The most important thing the Knicks need to prove though in order to target these guys is that they can win.
The New York Knicks have had a losing season for seven straight seasons now and until they prove that they can turn things around, nobody is going to want to come play for them, even though they are one of the most historic NBA franchises.
Spencer Dinwiddie being brought in would be the first spark for the Knicks and would set off a chain reaction around the league of All-Star level players actually giving the Knicks a chance to prove themselves.
Bringing in a high-level guard like Spencer Dinwiddie in exchange for two young players that have not worked out for the Knicks would be a steal and Dinwiddie is very much worth a single first-round pick. This trade would be a big win for the Knicks now and in the future and could be the “changing of the guard” for the Knicks losing ways.
