Bulls Receive: G Derrick Rose

Pistons Receive: F Chandler Hutchison, G Ryan Arcidiancono, NOP 2021 2nd Round Pick (swap, Chicago outgoing), CHI 2022 2nd Round Pick

The best years the Chicago Bulls had as an organization since their last championship in 1998 was when Derrick Rose was leading this team. From 2008-2016, Derrick Rose was the face of the Chicago Bulls and led them to the playoffs all but one year.

Rose was named an All-Star three times during his time with the Chicago Bulls and became the youngest player in NBA history to even win the MVP award at 22 years and 191 days old during the 2010-11 season. Before suffering some major knee injuries, Derrick Rose was one of the best point guards in the league and while he will never reach that level of play again, he is still a very good basketball player and has been improving greatly over the years.

The 32-year old guard has been trying to get back to playing at the high-level over the years and has seemed to find success the last two years with Minnesota and Detroit. Over the last two seasons, Rose has played in 101 games and has averaged 18.1 points, 5.0 assists and has shot 48.6% from the floor and 33.8% from three-point range.

While he is not the player he once was, Derrick Rose can still contribute at a high-level and can make a difference for the Bulls both on and off the court. Chicago knows they cannot compete for a title yet and acquiring Rose will not change things now, but he will have a big impact on this team moving forward.

The lessons he has learned over the course of his career and the experiences he has could be extremely beneficial to some of the youth on the Chicago Bulls. This guy was a league MVP at one point in his career and with the talent that Coby White and Zach LaVine possess in the Bulls’ backcourt, Rose could have a major impact on them moving forward.

After drafting Killian Hayes 7th overall, the Detroit Pistons do not really have a need for Rose anymore and may be more willing to trade him than they have been in the past. Detroit is doing everything they can to commit to building a youthful core of the future and by acquiring key draft picks and a guy like Chandler Hutchison, they could speed up their rebuild process greatly.

With all of that being said, let’s take a closer look at this trade and why it would make sense for both the Bulls and Pistons.
