Did the Boston Celtics re-tool enough to win a championship in 2020-21?

Season Outlook

This could be the best chance for the Boston Celtics to finally make the NBA Finals, but they will have to go through some pretty tough teams in the Eastern Conference. The Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Miami Heat are all teams with championship aspirations in the Eastern Conference this upcoming season and will not be easy teams to beat.

The entire success of the Boston Celtics this season will not revolve solely around Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Kemba Walker’s success, but also the success of Boston’s second-unit and bench. Aaron Nesmith and Jeff Teague will be two of Boston’s biggest contributors off the bench and must make an impact for this team to be successful. If the Celtics get no production from their bench this year, much like they did last year, they will suffer a similar result in the playoffs.

If Romeo Langford and Grant Williams can also be productive off the bench for the Celtics, it would be an added bonus. Langford missed almost all of the 2019-20 season due to wrist surgery and is a player the Celtics hope to utilize a lot in coming years as they drafted him No. 14 overall in 2019.

Expect to see Jayson Tatum take his game to the next level for the Celtics as well. At the end of last year, Tatum looked like an MVP-caliber player and the Celtics best player. If he can be utilized in this type of role for the Celtics and have Kemba Walker and Jaylen Brown playing at a high-level next to him, this Boston Celtics team can definitely make the NBA Finals.

The only question mark surrounding this Celtics team is if their offense can be efficient. In the playoffs last year, it seemed like the Celtics played a lot of one-on-one basketball with a lot of standing around. That will not cut it if they want to win a championship and they have to find ways to not only get everyone on the court involved, but constantly moving and getting open shots.

With the athleticism that both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown possess, the Celtics should have no problem utilizing the pick-and-roll on offense, and especially now with a true center like Tristan Thompson, they will not have to face double-teams on P&R situations. Definitely expect to see the Celtics finish as one of the top-five teams in the Eastern Conference this upcoming year.
