In the Los Angeles Clippers’ 51 seasons as an NBA organization, not once have they made it past the Western Conference Semifinals. After acquiring Kawhi Leonard and Paul George last offseason, the Clippers were a heavy favorite to win the 2020 NBA Championship, but again, could not make it out of the Western Conference Semis, even though they were up 3-1 on the Denver Nuggets.
Now, this offseason, the Clippers lost Montrezl Harrell to their arch rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, traded Landry Shamet to the Brooklyn Nets, and lost JaMychal Green and Moe Harkless as key bench players.
They did, however, acquire Luke Kennard in the Shamet trade and he should bolster their perimeter shooting. In three seasons with the Pistons, Kennard averaged 9.8 points per game and shot 40.2% from deep.
Kennard is a better perimeter threat than Shamet, helping the Clippers in an area they ranked sixth in during the regular season last year, and in addition to Kennard, the Clippers also brought in Serge Ibaka in free agency and re-signed Marcus Morris Sr, Reggie Jackson, and Patrick Patterson. Ibaka was a “must-get” for the Clippers after losing Harrell in free agency and is another veteran player who will be a perimeter threat.
Overall, when looking at the Clippers roster for this season compared to last year, it seems like they did not improve at all and if anything, they downgraded. This team is $28M+ overall the salary cap now and does not have much wiggle room when it comes to bringing in more talent, so who can the Clippers possibly target via trades to solidify themselves as true title contenders instead of title contenders once again.
Here are three intriguing trade targets the Clippers should be interested in and should pursue over the course of the 2020-21 NBA season.
