Why The Trade Benefits The Celtics
The Celtics are set up well for the future with their core of stars. They could have made some moves to improve the front-court outside of Tristan Thompson, but they did not make any more big splashes.
This is not a trade that would surprise anyone, but it would give them some more size and versatility.
Alfonzo McKinnie is coming off of a season where he played 40 games with the Cavaliers. He averaged just under 15 minutes per game, which means he was not much of a contributor.
If there is one franchise that can continue to develop a player, even at 28 years old, it is the Boston Celtics. At 6-foot-8, McKinnie could bring some size off the bench to eat up some minutes in the middle of a game.
The Celtics would also get a draft pick in this trade. Both the pick and McKinnie could be valuable in another deal as sweeteners if needed. It’s not a big move, but it’s a small tweak that could help.
