Why the Trade Works for the Golden State Warriors
There is a real need for the Golden State Warriors to gain a boost in the ball-handling department during situations that Stephen Curry is not on the floor. It’s likely that Steve Kerr will stagger the minutes of Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre Jr., but neither is necessarily primary ball handlers.
Derrick Rose would be able to lead the Warriors’ second unit with his ability to get into the paint at a high-rate and create for teammates. Alongside either Oubre Jr. or Wiggins, Rose would help put the group in a real advantageous situtation.
The Warriors did add Brad Wanamaker early in NBA free agency but he is a complementary talent, not one that sets the tone for a unit as a ball handler. He could play alongside Rose if needed, but upgrading from him would help Golden State.
Giving up Kevon Looney in this trade would be fine for the Warriors when considering they just drafted James Wiseman and still have Marquese Chriss. Also, Draymond Green is more than capable of sliding over to the five spot in small ball lineups, too.
