Why the Trade Would Benefit the New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans are in a position to trade their veteran players. They already did so with Jrue Holiday and could be looking to trade JJ Redick prior to the NBA season. Lonzo Ball and Jaxson Hayes are not veterans but they are valuable trade pieces moving forward.
This trade would land the Pelicans a point guard to team with Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson. Marcus Smart is a player with postseason experience during his time with the Boston Celtics and one who can run the offense in New Orleans.
Smart would serve as a needed replacement for Jrue Holiday, who is now in Milwaukee. The Pelicans would also get some draft picks in this deal to continue to build towards the future, too.
The Pelicans are in a good position with their young players at the top of the roster. It will be interesting to see how they go about building around their star players. Adding a talent like Marcus Smart would certainly help.
