Why the Trade Benefits the San Antonio Spurs

A star player entering the final year of his contract is exactly what the San Antonio Spurs are looking for. This gives them the option to re-sign Victor Oladipo if they feel the need or just let him walk in free agency. It will all depend on what happens throughout the season.

When looking at the current state of the Spurs roster, it is clear that Dejounte Murray is the cornerstone player that they will build around. If they are able to hold onto Aldridge, they will create a bit of a big three in hopes of making the postseason.

The main attraction of this deal is getting rid of a disgruntled player. If DeRozan is unhappy, it makes sense to send him away for a return. The Indiana Pacers could be a better fit for DeRozan— enabling him to return to the Eastern Conference.

San Antonio did not qualify for the postseason for the first time in 22 years. This is something that will not sit well with the franchise and that means changes could be on the horizon.
