Cavaliers, Knicks have discussed a trade for No. 5 pick in NBA Draft

The Cleveland Cavaliers hold the No. 5 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft but it may end up staying that way. Many teams have interest in trading up for their selection— including the New York Knicks.

According to The Athletic’s Kelsey Russo, the Cavaliers and Knicks have discussed a trade centered around the No. 5 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Cleveland is holding out for more compensation in a better deal.

The Knicks attempted to package the No. 8 and No. 23 picks to move up to No. 5 in their proposed deal with the Cavaliers— not meeting Cleveland’s demands. New York will need to come back with a better trade package or risk a different team taking advantage.

The prospect the Knicks appear set to gain the necessary position in the NBA Draft order to select is Obi Toppin. That comes with little surprise since New York has emerged as a CAA-proxy organization— the agency Toppin is signed to, who happens to have the GM’s son in his representation team.

There isn’t an urgent need for the Cavaliers to pursue any particular position in this year’s NBA Draft class. Trading down a few spots to gain more assets would open up an opportunity to still add intriguing talent, but it needs to come for the right price.

It remains to be seen if the New York Knicks will come back with a strong enough trade offer to entice the Cleveland Cavaliers. Regardless, there will be no shortage of teams attempting to pull off such a deal.
