Atlanta Hawks may sign Danilo Gallinari when free agency opens

The Atlanta Hawks face a major need to improve its roster after a disappointing season— despite the impressive play of Trae Young and John Collins. One method of doing so would be to utilize NBA free agency to add a talent like Danilo Gallinari.

According to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, the Hawks are going after Danilo Gallinari aggressive and they could very well sign him as soon as free agency opens.

With the Oklahoma City Thunder headed for a rebuild after trading Chris Paul, it’s highly unlikely Gallinari will choose to re-sign with the organization. This will open up a real opportunity for teams with cap space like the Hawks to make an aggressive push to sign him.

Depending on what Gallinari is seeking in free agency, signing a substantial one-year deal similar to what JJ Redick did with the Philadelphia 76ers appears to be the best course of action. For reference, Redick signed a one-year, $23 million deal in 2017.

The Hawks have been connected to Gordon Hayward as a potential trade partner for the Boston Celtics. He may be a better fit than Gallinari since he has mostly slotted in at the four spot due to athletic limitations— making a potential fit with John Collins and Clint Capela less than stellar.

The idea of taking a potentially substantial contract offer may not appeal to Danilo Gallinari if he’s indeed set on signing with an NBA title contender. The Atlanta Hawks are certainly far from reaching that status— making a one-year deal make all the more sense.
