Why the Trade Works for the Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks appear keen on adding a secondary playmaking option to complement Luka Doncic. While there has been mention of other names like Spencer Dinwiddie and Victor Oladipo, the top option for the Mavs appears to be Zach LaVine.
After having a season where they posted the greatest single-season offensive rating in NBA history, it’s tough to envision the Mavericks needing too much for additional help on that end. However, there is reason to believe LaVine would further the Mavs’ offense.
The impact of having five-out floor spacing and a pick-and-pop threat with extended range has maximized Doncic’s ability to get into the paint and finish. Imagine what that could do for a player with the explosiveness that LaVine has athletically?
Let’s not forget, LaVine has a reliable pull-up jumper from deep and that causes defenders to frequently have to go over ball screens and screen contact, in general. It would be a nightmare to have to handle LaVine in such situations with the level of space he’d have to operate.
Perhaps most importantly of all is the Mavericks need more of a scoring punch when Doncic is not on the court. Acquiring a player like LaVine would give the option for Dallas to stagger their minutes and have the high-flyer be the focus of the offense when Luka Doncic is resting.
