Why The New Orleans Pelicans Should Do It
The New Orleans Pelicans face an incredible amount of pressure to make the playoffs next season with Zion Williamson and company.
The Pelicans should pursue options to upgrade their core around Williamson, and if CJ McCollum actually became attainable, New Orleans should at least put in a call to the Portland Trail Blazers.
McCollum, 29, is in his prime and would give the Pelicans another scorer alongside Williamson, Ingram (if he returns) and Lonzo Ball. McCollum would add a needed impact as a pull-up shooter to help lead the offense— something that isn’t a strength of Holiday..
McCollum is entering the final year of his current contract, in which he’ll make $29 million. In 2021-22, his new three-year, $100 million extension will kick in. As of now, McCollum will be eligible to reach free agency in 2024, at the age of 33.
Jrue Holiday, in comparison, has a player option for 2021-22 and could elect free agency if he so chooses.
