2. Chris Paul
Yes, we have all seen the rumors on the Knicks kicking the tires on a blockbuster deal with Paul at the center. If Paul is a Knick, Carmelo Anthony could make his return since the two are close. While the latter is something that does not sound intriguing, a trade for Paul peaks interest.
If nothing else, the Knicks need a leader. They need a point guard that will come in and change the soft culture that we have watched for far too long. Paul would benefit the Knicks both on and off the court.
He averaged 17.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 1.6 steals for an Oklahoma City Thunder team that was not supposed to sniff the playoffs. Well, they were able to win 40 games and clinch a spot in the postseason.
The clear issue is money. Paul is owed $41.4 million next season and $44.2 million in 2021-2022. That is a tremendous amount of money for any player, but especially for one that is 35 years old. The Knicks have plenty of players on expiring deals they could send to Oklahoma City to match the salary. Names like Taj Gibson, Bobby Portis, Wayne Ellington, and Reggie Bullock come to mind. That would keep draft picks and young talent on the roster.
This deal seems like a long shot, but who knows with the Knicks. It is extremely controversial because of the big name and the financial situation. Regardless, a trade for Paul would bring a veteran point guard and leader to the Knicks on a short-term deal.
