Why the Cavaliers Should Do It
In this hypothetical trade, the Cavs trade one veteran to acquire another.
Cleveland takes a flier on Gordon Hayward, hoping ideally that the 30-year old can remain healthy.
Cleveland has an abundance of young players, but the Cavs need veteran scorers as well. Hayward fits the bill, as long as he can remain on the floor.
The one glaring issue in this trade for the Cavs is the fact that Tristan Thompson is a free agent, and trading Drummond makes center arguably their biggest need.
But Cleveland holds the No. 5 pick in next month’s draft, and the Cavs could easily address the position.
In 52 games last year, Hayward averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. Notably, Hayward’s eFG%, 56%, was by far the highest mark of his career thus far.
