The Los Angeles Lakers are in for a very interesting offseason after winning the NBA Finals. In order to continue winning and hopefully winning another title or two with LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way, it appears that the Lakers are looking to acquire Detroit Pistons star Derrick Rose.
Rumors have linked Rose to the Lakers for the past few weeks, but it appears that there is reason for those rumors.
According to a report from Sean Deveney of Heavy, the Lakers trading for Rose will be a “focal point” this offseason.
Now, with the Lakers in a much different position, coming off a championship and measuring what it will take to remain a contender as other teams around the league improve, Rose is again a focal point.
Other reports have come out that the Lakers pursued him at the trade deadline. They decided not to pull the trigger and instead dipped into the buyout market. Rose seems to be a priority for them this offseason.
With the news that Rajon Rondo will be testing free agency, Rose could very well compete for a starting job with the Lakers. A deal for Rose would likely include Kyle Kuzma, although there is no guarantee that Los Angeles would make that deal.
During the 2019-20 season with the Pistons, Rose ended up averaging 18.1 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game. He shot 49 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 30.6 percent of his three-point attempts.
Obviously, the Lakers would not be getting great perimeter shooting with this move. They would, however, be getting a guy who can create his own shot, get to the rim, and also create for teammates. Rose could be a valuable addition for the Lakers’ second unit.
At 32 years old, fans have been excited to see Rose resurrect his career over the last two years. Joining James, Davis, and the Lakers would be fun to watch.
Expect to hear plenty of rumors about Derrick Rose this offseason. The Pistons are likely going to move him and the Lakers seem like the clear landing spot at this point in time.
