2. Jayson Tatum Needs to Improve in Clutch
One of the main reasons some felt as though the Celtics had the edge in this series before it started was their variety of talented perimeter scorers. Jayson Tatum is a key element of that and in clutch situations, Boston should be able to rely on him.
In Game 1, Tatum tried to be the Celtics’ top option down the stretch in clutch time and miserably failed — coming up empty on all seven field-goal attempts with a chance to tie or take the lead within the final three minutes of the game.
Then in Game 2, he only attempted one shot in all of the fourth quarter. It appeared as though he wasn’t ready for the responsibility of shouldering the load for Boston down the stretch, which is troubling because avoiding a 2-0 series deficient is vital against the Heat.
Before the Celtics can emerge as title contenders, one of their main scoring options needs to become a legitimate closer. Whether it’s the veteran Kemba Walker or Tatum taking this next step, someone needs to get the job done in this area.
