They Can Fill Other Needs

Terry Rozier is more than just a rotational piece and many teams around the league realize that. For teams that don’t have the luxury of Kyrie Irving, he can be a fundamental piece of a guard rotation and for teams that are building, he can be their point guard of the future. There is legitimate possibility that Rozier could be flipped for a gain, either in pieces that help Boston now, or in assets. Nobody is better at selling high than Danny Ainge.

Once December 15th arrives and the majority of the league becomes movable pieces, the possibilities for Boston to make a move that bolsters their roster will expand. They could look to acquire players like Nikola Vucevic or Trevor Ariza for added depth down the stretch. A trade would also give them an opportunity to create roster space for veteran help on the buy out market by trading away players like Daniel Theis or Semi Ojeleye. The Boston Celtics have an opportunity to bring in picks from other teams, and those can be used to add talent as the team’s salary swells in coming years.

Absent of plans to sign Rozier this upcoming summer, Boston’s only alternative to trading him for other pieces is to let him walk after the season ends. If Boston’s front office has no problem running through the season with some expiring contracts, they might be better served with players besides Terry that can fill in minutes in other needed areas of the roster, and the best way to land those players is by trading Rozier.
