#2: Kemba Walker

Another guard that the Phoenix Suns should consider targeting is Kemba Walker. Of course, the fact that Walker will be an unrestricted free agent this summer is scary. Nonetheless, teams are starting to risk it all when it comes to making the next big step.

Prior to the 2017-18 season, the Oklahoma City Thunder traded for Paul George without knowing if he would re-sign with the team. Let’s not forget that last Saturday the Philadelphia 76ers acquired Jimmy Butler in a trade.

However, the Sixers expect Butler to re-sign with the team, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. As of now, the Phoenix Suns have nothing to lose and can take this risk. Walker is one of the best point guards in the league but is often overlooked because of Charlotte’s sports market.

Good Investment Long-Term

Walker is currently averaging 26.4 points, 6.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 37.1 percent from three. The former Connecticut Huskie is a score-first point guard who can make players on his team better, which is a rare trait. There is a huge difference between a point guard who fills the assists stat line and one who makes his teammates better.

The addition of Walker would provide the Phoenix Suns with ball-handling, durability and offensive efficiency.  Over the last three seasons, he has only missed six regular-season games. Due to the fast pace in which the Suns play at it’s important to acquire someone who is durable.

James Jones who is the team’s vice president of basketball operations is currently serving as the interim general manager. Jones will also work side by side with Trevor Bukstein, who is the team’s assistant general manager. With that being said the team’s front office could work this deal out considering the fact that Charlotte has made it clear that they are listening to offers for Walker.

Walker deserves a big contract but at this juncture, the team isn’t willing to pay him. If the Hornets paid their franchise guard max money they won’t be able to sign other pieces. On the other hand, selling North Carolina in free agency can be a tall task.
