1. Teague is One of the More Obtainable Options
The quest for a starting point guard in September following a free agency period that featured very few options even at the start of free agency is not an easy one. While many fans would love to have players like Damian Lillard or Kemba Walker, options like Jeff Teague are more obtainable and realistic but still are quite impactful.
The Suns would have to be willing to give up some serious assets to land one of the league’s top point guards. It’s important that they have at least a temporary option like Teague so that they can have a supporting group around their young building blocks as they develop as players and are ready to compete for a playoff spot.
It can’t be stated enough. Having a starting lineup of Jeff Teague, Devin Booker, Trevor Ariza, Ryan Anderson, and DeAndre Ayton would be a massive upgrade over the main unit that they used last season. For reference, the most used lineup by Phoenix last season was Tyler Ulis, Devin Booker, T.J. Warren, Marquese Chriss, and Tyson Chandler.
Let’s not forget that their bench would have a likely more developed Josh Jackson, Mikal Bridges, Richaun Holmes, and perhaps any combination of Shaquille Harrison, Élie Okobo, or De’Anthony Melton and perhaps Troy Daniels is a considerable upgrade over their bench from last season. They are already a deeper team but filling that starting point guard hole could be enough for a significant turnaround in success next season.
At the end of the day, having supporting players like Teague, Ariza, and Anderson in the starting unit would keep the defense honest for building blocks like Booker and Ayton. The ideal philosophy to follow for roster building, in my opinion, is to have pieces that make the game easier on your building blocks that allow those main pieces to take their team as far as they can. That’s what acquiring Jeff Teague would do for the Phoenix Suns.
