2. Shoot At Least 35 Percent From Deep

Johnson shot 3.4 threes a game last year, but only made 28 percent of them. He has never shot over 30 percent, although he shoots a decent amount of them.

Van Gundy routinely had Johnson spotting up and sitting in a corner waiting for a kickout three. Anyone who watched the Pistons knows Johnson is at his best in transition and with the ball in his hands in the half court. Johnson was misused by Van Gundy, and this affected the rest of Johnson’s development.

However, Johnson has to improve his outside shooting if he wants to unlock his potential.

On a team featured around a Griffin-Drummond frontcourt, the players around them need to have at least a decent shot from outside.

Johnson will never be a dead-eye shooter from the outside, but having defenses respect him from the outside will not only unlock his driving ability, it will open up space for Drummond and Griffin to operate.

Johnson has serious potential that Casey and many others see. However, it simply will never be unlocked unless he can consistently hit the outside shot. If Johnson achieves this goal, it could groundbreaking for the Pistons.
