Kelly Oubre Jr, F, Washington Wizards
Another fourth-year player! Like Johnson, if he takes a jump, he improves his teams’ ceiling. Oubre is the Wizards x-factor. Last year he took a big leap, can he make another one? Oubre averaged 11.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists on 34% shooting from deep and 82% from the line, all career highs. He also had a career-low turnover percentage, and due to the increase in three-point and free throw shooting Oubre had a career-best true shooting percentage.
There was no question he improved, but consistency was still an issue. He still only shot 40% from the field. A 6’7 forward with Giannis like arms and immense athleticism should shoot better than 40% from the field. The good news was he got better at drawing fouls last year, but with his skills, he should be better than just an average finisher at the rim. A year of added strength will help, he is still only 205 pounds.
Also adding an in-between game might help. Oubre shot awfully from midrange last season and doesn’t post up or have a floater either. He is at his best in transition, where he ranked in the 88th percentile.
Oubre has got long strides and is super fast. Once he gets the ball and sees a sliver of daylight, he is off. Five dribbles and he splits two Spurs defenders and takes off for a nasty left-handed jam. Oubre is quietly one of the best in-game dunkers in the league.
To be more of a complete player, he needs to get a little stronger, so he can get/finish at the rim more, add an in-between game and improve his playmaking. That is a lot to ask, but Oubre is capable. Even if he only adds one of those he will be a much better player.
Defensively he is about average. His length and athleticism help, but lack of strength and struggled defending pick and rolls hurt. He still dies on screens and doesn’t understand the nuances of pick and roll defense. Again the physical tools are there, and another year of experience will help. Oubre gets blocks and steals at a high rate and is a good defensive rebounder. Like Johnson though he fouls way too much.
I think Oubre can play both the three and the four and fit into a lot fo different Wizard lineups. He is capable of averaging 14-16 points, five rebounds, two assists and playing above average defense off the bench. Oubre is still only 22, and I think next year he has his best year yet. If he does the Wizards may be a little better then people think.
