The Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks recently discussed a John Collins trade, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

However, talks do not appear to have progressed at this time.

“The Mavericks and Hawks, for example, discussed the idea of swapping Dāvis Bertāns and the No. 15 pick for John Collins and the No. 10 pick, sources said, although those talks do not appear to have progressed at this time,” Fischer wrote.

Collins averaged 13.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 2022-23 for the Hawks while shooting 50.8% from the field, 29.2% from beyond the arc, and 80.3% from the free-throw line. He signed a five-year, $125 million contract with Atlanta in August 2021.

Collins has been in trade rumors for the past few seasons. The Hawks always seem open to moving the 25-year-old, but they end up never pulling the trigger.

It will be fascinating to see what Atlanta does with Collins this offseason. The forward has career averages of 15.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists. He was the 19th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

The Hawks lost to the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in six games. They haven’t gotten past the first round since reaching the conference finals in 2021.

The Mavericks are clearly trying to add more talent around All-Stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving after missing the playoffs this year. The team didn’t even qualify for the play-in tournament.

While Irving can leave Dallas this offseason since he’s an unrestricted free agent, the Duke product is expected to re-sign with the Mavericks.

“I hear he’s going back to Dallas on a 3+1 [a player option on the fourth year]. His contract will line up [identically] with Luka’s,” one player agent told Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus.
