Knicks’ Mikal Bridges Rejecting Extension? What It Means For New York

Mikal Bridges, Brooklyn Nets, NBA Trade Rumors

New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges is eligible to sign a two-year extension worth approximately $61 million starting October 1, but early indications suggest he may hold off on committing to a deal this year.

Bobby Marks of ESPN discussed the situation on the Hoop Collective podcast, revealing that Bridges is likely to wait until next year, when he can sign a more lucrative four-year extension.

Bridges to Wait for More Flexibility

Marks noted that Bridges is limited by the NBA’s six-month rule for players recently traded. Under this rule, he can only add two years to his current contract, keeping him with the Knicks through 2026. If Bridges waits until next year, he will have the option to sign a four-year extension, giving him greater financial flexibility and longer-term security.

The two-year extension currently on the table would give Bridges a starting salary of just under $30 million for the 2026-27 season, with a slight increase to just over $31 million the following year. While this is a considerable amount, it’s still less than what he could potentially earn with a four-year deal starting in 2025.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Mikal Bridges, New York Knicks Updates

As Marks mentioned, Bridges may reconsider his stance after the Knicks’ recent blockbuster trade for Karl-Anthony Towns, which reshaped the roster. With Towns joining Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Bridges to form a formidable core, the Knicks are gearing up for a serious playoff push.

Knicks’ Blockbuster Trade Could Shift Bridges’ Decision

While Bridges’ plan seems to be waiting for next summer’s extension, the Knicks’ new-look roster could change his thinking. With the arrival of Towns, New York has become one of the most active teams in the offseason, making major moves to stay competitive in the Eastern Conference.

Marks suggested that Bridges might opt to take a discount, similar to Jalen Brunson, to ease the Knicks’ salary cap situation and further solidify the team’s lineup.

Before the trade, Bridges appeared poised to delay his extension, prioritizing flexibility. Now, with New York’s revamped roster, he could decide to lock in a deal sooner than expected. Regardless of his decision,

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Mikal Bridges, New York Knicks Updates

Bridges remains a critical part of the Knicks’ future as they build a contender around their “Big Four” of Brunson, Towns, Anunoby, and Bridges. The Knicks are clearly focused on keeping pace with elite teams like the defending champion Boston Celtics, making every decision—including Bridges’ potential extension—significant.
