Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant is staying focused on the present and not concerned with contract extension talks ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season. Despite being eligible for a one-year, $59.7 million extension that would keep him in Phoenix through the 2026-27 season, Durant isn’t rushing the process.

Durant Focused on the Present, Not Contract Talks

“I have two years left on my contract,” Durant said during Monday’s media day. “I’m focused on being the best I can every day in the moment. We’ll figure that stuff out when it’s time.”

Durant, who turned 36 just a day before his media day appearance, remains under contract for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons with cap hits of $51.1 million and $54.7 million, respectively. His focus remains on performance rather than contract negotiations.

Durant has until Oct. 21 to sign the one-year extension, but it’s clear that his priority is leading the Suns alongside Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.

Suns Leadership Weighs In on Durant’s Future

Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein confirmed that the team has been in ongoing dialogue with Durant and his agent, Rich Kleiman. Bartelstein noted that the conversations aren’t limited to just contract matters. “The relationship is what matters the most,” Bartelstein said in July, adding that Durant was focused on his role with Team USA during the Paris Olympics.

Team governor Mat Ishbia reiterated his confidence in Durant’s long-term commitment to Phoenix, stating, “Kevin Durant loves it here, and we love Kevin. We don’t really go through contract extensions publicly, but I’ll tell you this: Kevin loves it here, we plan on him being here.”

Durant, now the NBA’s eighth all-time leading scorer, continues to show why Phoenix made a blockbuster trade for him in February 2023. Last season, Durant averaged 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game while shooting 52.3% from the field, 41.3% from three-point range, and 85.6% from the free-throw line.

With the Suns aiming for redemption after a first-round sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Durant’s focus remains on the present as he gears up for another season with high expectations in Phoenix.
