The New York Knicks’ blockbuster trade for Karl-Anthony Towns made NBA headlines, but one of the key pieces involved, Donte DiVincenzo, was reportedly excited about his role with the team before being shipped out.

The deal, which will send DiVincenzo, Julius Randle, Keita Bates-Diop, and a future first-round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves, leaves Knicks fans wondering what could have been with DiVincenzo on the roster.

DiVincenzo’s Enthusiasm for Knicks Role Contradicted by Trade

Before the trade, Donte DiVincenzo was reportedly “pumped” to be part of the Knicks’ upcoming season, particularly with the chance to play alongside Mikal Bridges. According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, DiVincenzo was more than willing to come off the bench, contradicting earlier reports from Ian Begley of SNY, which suggested that he wasn’t thrilled about a reduced role or fewer minutes.

Despite these mixed reports, the Knicks ultimately included DiVincenzo in the trade package for Karl-Anthony Towns. Begley also noted that any potential unhappiness on DiVincenzo’s end was unlikely to have played a significant role in New York’s decision. Instead, the franchise seized the opportunity to acquire Towns, a four-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection, to bolster its frontcourt for a playoff push.

Knicks’ Win-Now Mentality Leads to DiVincenzo Departure

The Knicks’ decision to part ways with DiVincenzo came down to their desire to solidify their roster for a deeper playoff run. New York’s front office saw a golden opportunity to acquire a high-impact player in Karl-Anthony Towns, who can dominate in the post and stretch the floor with his three-point shooting.

This move addresses a critical need in the frontcourt, especially with Isaiah Hartenstein joining the Oklahoma City Thunder and Mitchell Robinson dealing with an injury that could keep him sidelined for months.

Adding Towns alongside Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Josh Hart elevates the Knicks’ chances of being a true contender in the Eastern Conference. Though it cost them a valuable role player in DiVincenzo, Towns’ ability to score 30-plus points and his defensive presence as a double-double threat make him a pivotal addition.

For DiVincenzo, his departure from New York may have been sudden, but Knicks fans will undoubtedly give him a warm welcome when he returns to Madison Square Garden as a visitor. His time with the Knicks may have been short-lived, but his talent and passion for the game will leave an impact on fans.
