Khris Middleton is making progress in his recovery from offseason surgeries but will need more time before he’s cleared for full-contact play, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. The Milwaukee Bucks forward has not yet been approved for five-on-five action as training camp nears.

Middleton is coming off arthroscopic surgeries on both ankles, which addressed injuries from the 2023-24 season, and while he is recovering well, the Bucks are being cautious about rushing his return.

Cautious Approach to Middleton’s Recovery

According to Haynes, the Bucks are confident that Middleton is “progressing nicely” but are opting for a careful approach, prioritizing long-term health over immediate readiness. This plan will likely see Middleton participate in limited training camp activities, with a gradual increase in his workload as the season approaches.

Middleton’s surgeries addressed persistent ankle issues, including a left ankle sprain he suffered last season after landing on Kevin Durant’s foot during a February game. Despite the injury, Middleton played through the postseason, averaging an impressive 24.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in the Bucks’ first-round series against the Indiana Pacers. However, offseason procedures were deemed necessary to ensure he can return to full strength.

Bucks Face Added Pressure Without Middleton

The 33-year-old forward remains a crucial piece for the Bucks, averaging 15.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in 55 games last season. As the Bucks prepare for the 2024-25 season, they’ll need Middleton back in top form to compete in the increasingly competitive Eastern Conference.

However, starting the season without him at full capacity may place additional pressure on Giannis Antetokounmpo and newly acquired Damian Lillard to carry the load until Middleton is fully cleared.

Haynes also reported that the Bucks expect Middleton to take part in most of the training camp, with a ramp-up period likely as he works back to game shape. Milwaukee is hoping that their cautious approach will ultimately result in a healthy Middleton for the long haul, especially after back-to-back early playoff exits in previous seasons.
