The Phoenix Suns have committed to a unique core of three perimeter scorers, a decision that has garnered plenty of attention and debate. However, Year 1 of this experiment was far from successful. A mediocre regular season was followed by a disastrous four-game NBA playoff sweep, leaving much to be desired. Despite this, the Suns are running it back this season, with their most notable offseason addition being point guard Tyus Jones.
While Jones brings solid playmaking, his presence alone won’t dramatically change Phoenix’s fortunes. The Suns’ real focus should be on improving their defense, specifically by adding a reliable big man. Given their cap restrictions, Phoenix will need to find affordable options. Here are three potential big men who could fit their needs.
Jonas Valančiūnas, Washington Wizards
Jonas Valančiūnas has been a name frequently mentioned in trade discussions, and the Suns should find a way to enter that conversation. At $11 million, Valančiūnas would be an ideal addition for Phoenix, giving them a much-needed stretch 5. While he’s not an elite defender, his size and physicality allow him to compete with the best in the league, making him an invaluable asset for the Suns’ slender roster.
Valančiūnas is known for his consistent double-double production, averaging around 12 points and 11 rebounds per game throughout his career. His ability to stretch the floor would provide spacing for the Suns’ perimeter stars, while his rebounding and interior presence would help shore up their defense. For Phoenix, Valančiūnas represents a solid, reliable option.
Robert Williams III, Portland Trail Blazers
Another potential target is Robert Williams III, though his injury history raises some concerns. Williams has only managed to play one full season in his career, which would typically be a red flag for most teams. However, the Suns have built their core around injury-prone stars, so Williams could fit right in.
When healthy, Williams is one of the league’s top defenders, excelling as both a rim protector and occasional perimeter defender. His shot-blocking ability and defensive instincts make him a force in the paint, while his passing adds versatility on offense.
For a Suns team that often stagnates on that end, Williams could be a crucial addition, bringing much-needed energy and creativity. If Williams can stay healthy, he could be a game-changer for Phoenix as long as the Suns medical staff is confident in his current status.
Steven Adams, Houston Rockets
The final name to watch is Steven Adams, a player who has a history with Suns star Kevin Durant long before his time in Phoenix. Adams missed the entire 2023-24 season due to knee surgery, but he is expected to return this season. If the Suns can acquire him, they will be getting one of the league’s best defenders, rebounders, and screen-setters.
Adams’ combination of size, toughness, and defensive prowess would be a perfect fit for Phoenix. During his last active season, Adams averaged 9 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for the Memphis Grizzlies, while anchoring their defense.
With his trade value potentially low due to his recent injury, the Suns could make a move to acquire Adams at a bargain price. If healthy, Adams could provide the interior presence and rebounding the Suns sorely lack.
