Despite no formal indication from the Miami Heat that they are considering trading Jimmy Butler, the Golden State Warriors have reportedly shown significant interest in the six-time NBA All-Star.

Sam Amick of The Athletic, during an appearance on The TK Show podcast, revealed that the Warriors “have interest” in Butler and likely made some exploratory calls to gauge the Heat’s willingness to trade him this summer.

Golden State’s pursuit of Butler comes at a time when the franchise is focused on making a major move to bolster its roster for the 2024-25 NBA season. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, there is a strong belief within the Warriors’ organization that their “transactional flexibility will be a major weapon” if the opportunity arises to land a star. This flexibility includes having most of their future first-round picks, a group of promising young players, and several mid-level contracts, all of which provide the team with the assets to facilitate a significant trade.

Earlier in the offseason, the Warriors pursued trades for stars like Paul George and Lauri Markkanen, but neither deal materialized. George opted to sign a four-year, $211.58 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, and Markkanen re-upped with the Utah Jazz on a four-year, $195.8 million deal. In response, the Warriors made smaller, yet strategic moves, adding Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson via trade, as well as signing De’Anthony Melton in free agency.

These moves added valuable depth around Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins, but the team remains on the lookout for a second All-Star-caliber player to pair with Curry for a potential championship run.

Butler’s Uncertain Future in Miami Raises Trade Speculation

Butler’s future with the Heat has been an ongoing topic of conversation within NBA circles. While his time in Miami has been the longest stint of his career since leaving the Chicago Bulls, sources have indicated to NBA Analysis Network that Butler’s relationship with the Heat has experienced its share of ups and downs. This has fueled speculation that a trade could be on the horizon, especially with Butler’s contract situation looming.

In June, The Athletic‘s Shams Charania reported that Butler intends to play out his current contract, which includes a player option after the 2024-25 season. He has made it clear that he will not sign an extension with Miami or any other team if traded before that opt-out period. This has left the Heat in a tricky situation, with president Pat Riley openly admitting that the organization has not yet decided whether to offer Butler a max extension.

“We have not discussed that internally right now,” Riley told reporters following the Heat’s first-round playoff exit last season. “We have to look at making that kind of commitment and when do we do it. We don’t have to do it until 2025, actually. But we’ll see. We haven’t made a decision on it, and we haven’t really in earnest discussed it.”

One of the primary concerns for Miami is Butler’s age and injury history. Butler, who turns 35 this week, has missed at least 15 regular-season games in each of the past five seasons due to various injuries, including an MCL injury that sidelined him for the entire playoff series against the Boston Celtics.

Butler is eligible for a two-year, $112.9 million extension, but there are questions about whether the Heat will be willing to make that kind of financial commitment given his age and recent injury struggles.

Golden State’s Flexibility Makes a Butler Trade Possible

If the Heat decide to explore trade options for Butler, the Warriors are in a strong position to make a compelling offer. With the departure of Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, Golden State is looking for another star to complement Stephen Curry during the twilight of his prime.

While the Warriors have bolstered their depth with players like Hield, Anderson, and Melton, Butler’s elite two-way skills and leadership could provide the high-impact presence they need to contend for another championship.

The Warriors also have the assets to make a trade work. They have held onto most of their future first-round picks and have several young players like Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and rookie Brandin Podziemski, who are developing into valuable assets.

Although Kuminga had a breakout year in 2023-24, averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, Golden State has yet to offer him a maximum contract extension, indicating they are keeping their financial options open for a potential trade.

Slater noted that the Warriors’ transactional flexibility—having both trade assets and manageable contracts—gives them a unique advantage in pursuing a player like Butler. If their young core of Kuminga, Moody, and others don’t take the next step, these players could be valuable trade chips that Golden State uses to land a star player before the trade deadline.

On the Miami side, they may want to give their current roster—featuring Butler, Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr.—one more shot at success before considering a major trade. However, if the Heat struggle to improve on their eighth-place finish from last season, Pat Riley may decide to explore trading Butler rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency.

The Warriors’ Title Aspirations and Butler’s Uncertain Future

While Jimmy Butler’s status with the Miami Heat remains up in the air, the Golden State Warriors have made it clear that they are ready to capitalize on any opportunity that presents itself.

With their transactional flexibility, deep roster, and star-led core, Golden State is positioning itself for a potential blockbuster move that could elevate them back into title contention.

Whether Butler ultimately becomes available remains to be seen, but if he does, the Warriors are well-equipped to make a deal happen.
