As the 2024-25 NBA season approaches, Paul George’s arrival in Philadelphia has sparked excitement among 76ers fans. However, not everyone believes the transition will be smooth sailing for the nine-time NBA All-Star. Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green offered a blunt assessment of what George should expect from one of the most passionate – and demanding – fanbases in all of sports.

In Green’s view, Philadelphia fans are as critical as they are supportive, and George’s ability to handle their high expectations will be crucial in determining whether his tenure is a success.

“Good luck, Paul George,” Green said pointedly. “He better play well, or they’re going to crush Paul George if he don’t play well. Oh my god.”

A Tough Crowd Awaits in Philly

Philadelphia fans have long been notorious for their tough love. While they support their teams with unwavering loyalty, they also hold players to extremely high standards. This reputation has only grown in recent years, with several high-profile players feeling the brunt of their frustration.

George, with his recent history of inconsistent performances, is stepping into an environment where second chances are rarely given.

“They already got a nasty taste in their mouth from their last three [small forwards],” Green added. “They never felt like Tobias Harris brought it, so that’s why. If George doesn’t bring it, they’re going to feel the same way about him.”

Harris, despite solid production during his time in Philadelphia, has been the subject of ongoing criticism from the fanbase. The 76ers faithful expected more from Harris, particularly in the playoffs, and their dissatisfaction has lingered. Now, George finds himself stepping into the same role, and expectations are even higher.

George’s Past Struggles Under Scrutiny

While George’s resume is impressive—nine All-Star appearances, a perennial All-NBA contender, and one of the top two-way players in the game—he has also faced his share of criticism throughout his career.

One of the most memorable instances came during the 2020 NBA season in the “bubble,” when George struggled to perform at his usual level. The weight of expectations seemed to take a toll, and he openly admitted to feeling the pressure.

In Philadelphia, that pressure is amplified tenfold. The city hasn’t won an NBA title since 1983, and the desire for a championship is palpable. George, who signed a four-year, $212 million max contract with the Sixers this summer, is expected to help deliver that elusive title. But as Green pointed out, Philadelphia fans are not known for their patience, and George won’t have much time to acclimate.

Harshest Critics at Home

Green also highlighted a unique aspect of the Philadelphia sports culture: the fans are often harder on their own players than they are on the opposition. While this may seem counterintuitive, it’s a long-standing tradition in the city.

Philadelphia fans demand excellence, and they’re not afraid to voice their displeasure when their teams fall short.

“Philly fans are harder on their own team than they are on the opposing team,” Green noted. “Like, Philly killed their own players. The guys coming in, and they’re focused on crushing their guys so much, that they really don’t kill you when you go to Philly like that. Like they be crushing their own guys. That’s the point. It’s hard to last there.”

One player who has thrived under the pressure is reigning MVP Joel Embiid. Embiid has embraced the city’s passionate fanbase, using their energy as motivation, and has been rewarded with their unwavering support. However, as Green suggested, not every player is built to handle that level of intensity.

The Stakes Are High

George’s arrival in Philadelphia brings immense expectations, and for good reason. The 76ers have been on the cusp of a championship for several seasons, but repeated playoff disappointments have left fans hungry for more. With Embiid at the peak of his powers, the addition of George is seen as a move that could push the team over the edge.

Yet, as Green alluded to, the stakes are incredibly high. The pressure to win in Philadelphia is unlike almost any other NBA city, and George will have to prove that he can rise to the occasion.

If he struggles early, the fanbase won’t hesitate to let him know, and the comparisons to Tobias Harris and Ben Simmons—two players who faced similar scrutiny—will likely surface.

“Paul George better play well,” Green concluded. “And they better win.”

In the end, the only way for George to win over the Philadelphia faithful is simple: deliver a championship. Anything short of that, and Green’s warning may prove prophetic.
