As NBA teams gear up for the upcoming season, franchises are exploring trade deals and roster adjustments to strengthen their lineups. While some players are preparing for their debuts or switching teams, others face setbacks, including Los Angeles Lakers forward Christian Wood.

Wood is expected to miss the start of the 2024 NBA season due to a knee injury requiring surgery. Medical reports indicate that Wood underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, casting doubt on his availability for the opening games.

The Los Angeles Lakers, who kick off their season on Oct. 22 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, will likely be without Wood, which could impact their roster depth as they aim for a strong start.

A Struggling First Season with the Lakers

Wood joined the Lakers last season but was limited to just 50 games due to recurring knee issues. His last appearance came in a Feb. 14 win over the Utah Jazz. Throughout the 2023-24 season, his production suffered, as he averaged 6.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per game.

This drop in performance contrasts with his earlier career highs, especially during his tenure with the Houston Rockets, where he averaged 19.1 points and 9.9 rebounds over two seasons.

The Lakers signed Wood with the hope that he would be a key rotational player. However, his recurring knee problems have limited his ability to contribute significantly. This latest surgery follows an earlier arthroscopic procedure on the same knee in March, making the upcoming season’s start even more uncertain for him.

Durability Issues Have Plagued Wood’s Career

Christian Wood has played for a number of NBA teams since his career began in 2015, including the Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Pelicans, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, and now the Lakers.

Despite his undeniable talent, injuries have prevented Wood from fully realizing his potential. He has never played more than 68 games in a single season, with durability remaining his biggest challenge.

Known for his ability to stretch the floor and his rebounding skills, Wood has shown flashes of brilliance, particularly during his two seasons with the Rockets. However, his first season with the Lakers saw a significant drop in his efficiency, with Wood shooting just 46.6% from the field and 30.7% from three-point range.

Can Wood Rebound from Another Setback?

Wood was optimistic about his recovery, expressing last month that he intended to “come back next season with a vengeance.” However, this latest surgery delays those plans, with his return timeline now uncertain.

While he is set to be re-evaluated in eight weeks, starting the season sidelined complicates his chances of carving out a more prominent role in the Lakers’ rotation. If the recovery timeline holds, Wood could return relatively early in the season.

Yet, the Lakers will need to find ways to adapt in his absence, especially as they navigate the challenging early stretch of the NBA season. For now, the focus remains on his recovery and whether he can regain his form post-surgery to make a meaningful impact on the team.
