Zach LaVine’s Trade Market: Top Suitors For Bulls Star Entering Season

The situation surrounding a potential Zach LaVine trade has been nothing short of perplexing as the 2024-25 NBA season approaches. For over a year, speculation about growing discontent within the Chicago Bulls organization has circulated widely.

Given the Bulls’ lackluster performance, many expected a trade imminent. However, a disconnect between LaVine’s perceived value and the Bulls’ expectations has stalled any such deal.

Injuries have further hampered LaVine’s 2023-24 season, causing his trade value to plummet. His three-year, $138 million contract is now considered one of the most burdensome in the NBA. Interest in LaVine from other teams appears to have dried up, leaving the Bulls in a difficult position. Unless a team takes a gamble on the two-time All-Star, Chicago may be forced to ride out the situation.

LaVine’s recent decline in production, averaging just 19 points per game over 25 games last season, has fueled speculation that his career may be on a downward trajectory. However, during his peak, LaVine averaged closer to 25 points per game and earned two All-Star selections.

While concerns about LaVine’s future are valid, the adage “no contract is untradeable” still holds. Eventually, a team may decide to take a chance on LaVine.

Here’s a look at potential destinations for LaVine:

Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors emerge as a plausible landing spot for LaVine. The team’s direction has been unclear in recent seasons, hovering around .500 without significant growth. Beyond Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett, the Raptors lack a true prospect capable of ascending to stardom. Yet, Toronto appears committed to building around Barnes, having recently extended his contract.

In this context, the Raptors could consider taking a chance on LaVine, especially with the departure of Gary Trent Jr., which left a gap in the shooting guard position. LaVine would provide the scoring punch Toronto desperately needs, particularly with no player on the roster averaging more than 23 points per game.

Surrounding him with a core of Immanuel Quickley, Barnes, and Barrett could mitigate his defensive shortcomings. While acquiring LaVine carries some risk, his contract could become more tradeable, making this a calculated gamble for the Toronto Raptors.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs present another intriguing option. Although still amid a rebuild, the Spurs could take a flyer on LaVine. As Victor Wembanyama develops into the player many expect, LaVine’s contract could become a valuable trade asset. In the meantime, the Spurs would gain a veteran presence to mentor Wembanyama alongside the recently acquired Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes.

LaVine would also bring a legitimate scoring threat to the Spurs, helping to create space and divert defensive attention, which could accelerate Wembanyama’s growth. With ample cap space, the Spurs are well-positioned to absorb LaVine’s contract.

Additionally, Keldon Johnson, who has seen his role diminish in San Antonio, could benefit from a fresh start in Chicago, where the Bulls need a power forward. At 24 years old, Johnson fits well within the Bulls’ rebuilding timeline, making a potential trade mutually beneficial.

Los Angeles Lakers

Unsurprisingly, the Los Angeles Lakers remain a prominent contender in the LaVine trade discussion. For even longer than the rumors of discord between LaVine and the Bulls, speculation about a move to Los Angeles has persisted. Whether it’s LaVine’s interviews or his decision to sign with Klutch Sports, the signs have pointed to a potential union with the Lakers. The key question is how much the Lakers are willing to sacrifice to acquire him.

Thus far, the Lakers have shown no inclination to overhaul their roster, with the front office opting to maintain the status quo during the offseason. They believe in the potential of their current core and intend to give it another shot. However, with a new head coach in JJ Redick, the team’s performance in the upcoming season remains uncertain. If the results are disappointing, the Lakers might consider shaking things up.

Such a shake-up could involve a trade for LaVine. LeBron James has consistently thrived alongside prolific scorers, and LaVine would offer just that. Additionally, LaVine’s ability to shoot from a distance would address one of the Lakers’ persistent weaknesses.

Over the past few seasons, LaVine has averaged more than seven three-point attempts per game, providing the Lakers with a much-needed boost in that area. While there are concerns about LaVine’s defensive capabilities, a trade centered around D’Angelo Russell could neutralize those worries.

Ultimately, the road for Zach LaVine may indeed lead to Los Angeles, but the journey remains uncertain.
