The New York Knicks have already made one major trade this offseason. Could they be lining up another, with Minnesota Timberwolves star big man Karl-Anthony Towns being the prize?

According to New York Knicks content creator and host on SiriusXM Radio, CP The Franchise, the team remains interested in acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns. He spoke about the NBA rumors during a segment with Ariel Helwani.

“Knicks “want Towns…They see what Boston can do with true 5-Out system…We have to monitor this Julius extension…Not necessarily advocating…Just telling you…the interest’s real,” CP The Franchise said during a recent Knicks Fan TV Live segment. (H/T New York Basketball)

Replicating what the Boston Celtics have done is something every franchise in the NBA should be doing. They were the most dominant team in the league from opening night through the final buzzer of Game 5 when they defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals.

They succeeded, in large part, in having a 5-out system that every player on the court is capable of scoring from 3-point range. That isn’t something the New York Knicks have ever had with Tom Thibodeau as head coach, as he prefers a traditional defensive-minded center who rebounds and protects the rim.

Karl-Anthony Towns is not that. The former No. 1 overall pick is as talented of a scoring big man as there is in the NBA. He can score from all three levels and is one of the best shooters, regardless of position, in the league.

Adding him to the mix would lead to major philosophical changes for the organization. Towns hasn’t found much success as the center, and the first go-round with Thibodeau as his head coach wasn’t the greatest fit.

But, as CP The Franchise noted, the Julius Randle extension is what needs to be watched. How talks between him and the New York Knicks transpire could give a hint about what their plans are.

If he doesn’t sign an extension, NBA rumors are going to start heating up. That is the natural progression of things when a player of his caliber is entering a potential walk season with a player option looming for the 2025-26 campaign.

Debates will rage on about how Karl-Anthony Towns fits with the New York Knicks as currently constructed compared to Randle. Also, what would compensation look like? Would a third or fourth team need to get involved?

Nothing seems imminent on the Karl-Anthony Towns front for the New York Knicks. But, it is worth monitoring as CP The Franchise stated he is the player Leon Rose and company have set their sights on after landing Mikal Bridges ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft.
