Klay Thompson’s future with the Golden State Warriors faces more doubt now than ever. He is set to reach NBA free agency, given the lack of a contract extension agreement being reached.

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, negotiations between Thompson and the Warriors have hit a stalemate, raising questions about his future with the team.

There is currently no contract offer from the Warriors for Thompson to sign. The report suggested that “no productive discussion” between the two sides occurred, describing their discussions as “frozen.”

As the situation currently stands, Thompson is more likely to leave the Warriors than re-sign in free agency. “With free agency now less than 10 days away, Thompson’s exit from the only franchise he has ever known feels closer and more probable than ever before,” Slater wrote.

This contrasts with what ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported, who mentioned that Thompson’s two-year contract was on the table. Regardless, it wouldn’t meet what Thompson seeks. According to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, Thompson wants at least a three-year contract.

Slater added that despite the Magic’s initial interest in signing Thompson, there hasn’t been any traction in a deal getting done. “There has been no traction between Thompson and the Orlando Magic, according to league sources, despite some initial mutual interest,” Slater wrote.

In the 2023-24 season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 43.2% from the field, 38.7% from three-point range, and 92.7% from the free-throw line. He’s been impacted by previous injuries with his defensive impact reduced, but he remains an intriguing wing player if the price is right.

The legacy Thompson will leave with the Warriors since being selected 11th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft should not go overlooked. While serving as a cornerstone for the franchise, he’s earned five All-Star selections, two All-NBA honors, and one All-Defensive team nod while helping secure four championships.

Thompson’s eligibility to compete in international basketball this summer, as well as his NBA contractual uncertainties, are uncertain. He is seeking to be released from USA Basketball to compete with the Bahamian national team to compete alongside Deandre Ayton, Buddy Hield, and Eric Gordon. Still, he has yet to receive that authorization from FIBA.

It remains to be seen where Thompson will play in the NBA next season. He’s in a stage of his career where competing for championships remains a priority, but the restrictions teams have to execute sign-and-trade maneuvers under the current CBA could complicate his options.
