The Golden State Warriors have presented Klay Thompson with a two-year contract offer ahead of NBA free agency, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

During an appearance on The Hoop Collective, MacMahon shared, “we’ve heard it’s a two-year offer.” He emphasized that for Thompson, the length of the deal may hold more significance than the financial terms, noting, “it’s as much about years as dollars in some of these cases.”

Previously, NBC Sports’ Monte Poole reported that Thompson seeks a contract lasting “at least three years.” He played out the final season of a five-year, $190 million contract but understands he will get less than a max deal on his next deal.

Thompson can re-sign with the Warriors before becoming an unrestricted free agent on June 30 due to a new league rule. Before reaching an agreement, he still faces negotiation challenges with the team. On May 30, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported that there had been “no notable movement” in contract discussions between the two sides.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Klay Thompson, Golden State Warriors Updates

There was an apparent decline in Thompson’s performance during the 2023-24 season. His scoring average was reduced to 17.9 points, his worst single-season average since 2012-13. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 43.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from three-point range,

Thompson’s role fluctuated between the starting lineup and the bench, and despite finishing the regular season with a 46-36 record, the Warriors missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. Considering Golden State’s limited window to contend with Stephen Curry, there is no time to waste. The 10th-seeded Warriors lost to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament, suggesting they are far from being the team they desire.

It’s possible Thompson could return to the Warriors after negotiating with other teams in free agency. However, another franchise might offer him the three-year deal he desires. According to Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic, there is “mutual interest” between Thompson and the Orlando Magic.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Klay Thompson, Golden State Warriors Updates

If the Warriors and Thompson cannot agree on the length of a new contract, he may join a different team at the start of the 2024-25 season. However, with Paul George facing an uncertain future with the Los Angeles Clippers, he’ll likely be the driving force on the wing market, complicating Thompson’s options.

Rival teams could consider Kentavious Caldwell-Pope a cheaper option than Thompson, who has lesser expectations for his role.
