The Los Angeles Lakers have found a replacement for Darvin Ham by hiring JJ Redick to become their next head coach ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Redick has agreed to a four-year contract with the Lakers. He reportedly met with Lakers Vice President and General Manager Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss over the weekend before ultimately receiving an offer on Thursday.

“Redick, an ESPN NBA analyst who played 15 years in the league, met with Lakers vice president and general manager Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss over the weekend, and conversations on the vacancy continued throughout the week, sources said,” Wojnarowski wrote.

Among the factors that led to Redick’s selection as the Lakers’ next coach was Pelinka’s belief that he could connect with players and his advanced understanding of the game. It certainly doesn’t hurt that one of those players Redick connects with is LeBron James, with whom he co-hosts a podcast focused on X’s & O’s.

“Pelinka became sold on Redick’s ability to connect with players and his basketball IQ and believes surrounding him with an elite coaching staff will help to shorten his learning curve into his first coaching job, sources said,” Wojnarowski wrote.

The Lakers previously attempted to hire UConn head coach Dan Hurley to a six-year, $70 million contract. Still, he declined the offer to remain in a program he’s built to become a back-to-back national champion.

Coming off a season that ended with being swept by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs, the Lakers have a short period to achieve significant improvement before James’ playing career is over, or at least his time with the organization is.

The Lakers are taking a clear risk with hiring Redick, but some of the league’s best hires naturally came with external concerns.
