The Indiana Pacers are making a strategic move early in the NBA offseason, signing All-Star forward Pascal Siakam to secure their core for the foreseeable future.

According to ESPN, Siakam is set to sign a four-year, $189.5 million maximum contract, a move that will ensure his presence with the Pacers for the foreseeable future and instill confidence in the team’s outlook. This significant deal highlights Indiana’s commitment to building a championship-caliber team around its core stars.

“Pacers president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard and general manager Chad Buchanan presented the max offer to Siakam and his agents Todd Ramasar and Jaafar Choufani of Life Sports Agency on Tuesday — shortly after the NBA’s new early contact rules allowed for teams to begin negotiating extensions and free agent deals with their own players after the NBA Finals,” Adrian Wojnarowski wrote

ESPN reports Siakam will sign the deal once the league’s free agency moratorium ends on July 6.

“Siakam, 30, plans to sign the deal once the league’s free agency moratorium ends on July 6, sources said,” Wojnarowski added.

In January, the Pacers turned a corner with Siakam’s arrival in a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Raptors. With Siakam on board, the team made its first appearance in the Eastern Conference finals in a decade, an accomplishment that excited fans about its potential.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Tyrese Haliburton, Pascal Siakam, Indiana Pacers Updates

In the final year of Siakam’s Raptors contract, the Pacers hoped his championship experience and All-NBA pedigree would perfectly complement Tyrese Haliburton. Haliburton and Siakam will remain under contract for the foreseeable future. After Haliburton’s five-year, $245 million max extension last year, Siakam’s contract will be the second largest in Pacers history.

Siakam’s shooting improved significantly following his trade from Toronto to Indiana despite a slight dip in scoring production. Siakam previously served as a key contributor to Toronto’s first championship season after being a late first-round pick.

With Siakam in the fold, the Pacers added a scoring threat with size and skill that can be given the ball to operate in the post, run pick-and-roll as a ball handler, score in isolation, and be a force in transition. He’s continued to improve his spot-up ability with efficient results on open shots. Indiana needed an option to move around the half-court that provides different layers to the offense to take pressure off Haliburton. Next to Myles Turner, who provides stretch five presence with rim protection, Indiana can maximize Siakam’s skill set.

The Pacers received impressive results from Andrew Nembhard throughout their postseason run, suggesting intriguing potential for the 2024-25 campaign. Bennedict Mathurin, who ended his season sidelined with an injury, remains another development option to monitor long term as Indiana vies to take another step forward.

There are some decisions to be made for the Pacers heading into the offseason. Obi Topping is a player they want to retain, but the team did use a lottery pick on Jarrace Walker last summer. Balancing out the roster more could be the necessary step while maximizing assets.
