Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic received a pain-killing injection to numb the area around his thoracic contusion before the team’s Game 2 loss against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals and is expected to receive another before Game 3, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon and Malika Andrews.

Doncic is listed as probable for the upcoming game with his previous lingering injuries being dropped from the injury report, including a right knee sprain and left ankle soreness.

“I feel good,” Doncic said after Tuesday’s practice. “I don’t want to get into any more details. But I feel good.”

While Doncic has continually played through injuries during the postseason, his status became something to monitor even on the NBA Finals stage when he was downgraded to questionable on the afternoon of Game 2 and wasn’t cleared to play until he completed his pregame warmup.

Despite the uncertainty, Doncic played 42 minutes in the loss, posting 32 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, and 4 steals. He even clarified there was genuine question about his availability but he will always do whatever he can to play. “I mean, I actually was — you know, I always want to play. So all day we did a lot of things to get ready for the game,” he said.

Despite the loss, Doncic made NBA history with his performance by joining LeBron James, Charles Barkley, and Jerry West as the only players to achieve 30-point triple-doubles in Finals losses, suggesting the rarity of both those performances even occurring, but particularly for a team to lose despite receiving that level of impact.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics Updates

As previously noted, Doncic has been contending with a sprained right knee since the Mavericks’ third game of this postseason. He has stated that this injury likely won’t heal until he gets an extended rest period. Additionally, left ankle soreness has been a recurring issue on his injury report since the second round.

Despite these injuries, Doncic has been a cornerstone for the Mavericks throughout their playoff run, playing in all 19 games and leading all players in multiple statistical categories this postseason. He’s averaged 29.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 1.8 steals, shooting 44.6% from the floor, 34.8% from deep, and 77.4% on free throws.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics Updates

The Mavericks will need Doncic to battle through injuries and the team to find a greater offensive rhythm going forward after facing significant shooting struggles to begin the series.
