Before Game 2 of the NBA Finals, Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd either simply gave a compliment or attempted to stir up controversy in the Boston Celtics locker room by naming Jaylen Brown as the opposition’s best player.

Kidd noted that Brown’s ability to guard someone like Luka Doncic while also contributing offensively makes him a valuable asset to the Celtics. Many were surprised to hear this remark, considering that Jayson Tatum was named All-NBA First-Team and an MVP candidate.

“Well, Jaylen is their best player,” Kidd said. “He plays both sides, defense and offense, at a high rate. And he’s been doing that the whole playoffs.”

However, Brown and Jayson Tatum both stayed out of feeding into it. “I don’t have no reaction,” Brown said about Kidd’s comment.

Tatum acknowledged that people have attempted to drive a wedge between them over the years, but the team understands it’s all part of the game, and they’re used to it by now.

“This is a team sport,” Tatum said. “We’ve been in this position for many years of guys trying to divide us and say that one of us should be traded or one is better than the other. So it’s not our first time at the rodeo.”

Despite possible attempts to create tension, Brown and Tatum showed no interest in the debate. Brown said, “We’ve been just extremely focused on what our roles and our jobs are. We have all had to sacrifice.” He acknowledged that Tatum had to make sacrifices and respected him for it.

Tatum echoed similar sentiments, stating the Celtics have grown accustomed to handling external noise, but he understands it’s part of being a high-profile player, “Right now, at this point, it’s whatever it takes to win, and we can’t let any outside interpretations try to get in between us,” he said.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla emphasized the importance of focusing on the truth and building relationships within the team.

“At the end of the day, nobody knows because they are not in the locker room,” Mazzulla said. “What goes on in our locker room, how we communicate with each other, how we build relationships with each other and how we treat each other on and off the floor, that’s the most important thing.”

The Celtics’ dominance in Game 1, where they led by as many as 29 points and put the game away in the second half, was overshadowed by Kidd’s comments. However, the team remains focused on its goal and is determined to carry its performance forward into Game 2.

The debate over whether Brown or Tatum is the better player has been ongoing for years. Both players have led the Celtics deep into the playoffs multiple times. However, the team has made it clear that it is not interested in individual accolades or comparisons. It is focused on winning the NBA championship, and it will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal.

Ultimately, if Kidd’s goal was an attempt to stir up controversy, it seemingly fell flat, as the Celtics remained united and focused on their goal of winning the NBA Finals.

“People wouldn’t talk about me if I wasn’t one of the best players,” Tatum said. “I’m not the only player that they have ever talked about, and I won’t be the last. So understanding that side of it.”

The Celtics are determined to prove they are the best team in the NBA and will do whatever it takes to make that happen, even if it means overcoming more external noise.
