The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly highly interested in the possibility of JJ Redick becoming their head coach before the 2024-25 NBA season.

According to Jovan Buha and Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Lakers view Redick as a potential coaching talent similar to Pat Riley, someone who could provide immediate impact and lead the team for many years.

Despite Redick’s lack of coaching experience—he retired from the NBA in 2021 and spent the last three years in the media—the Lakers’ front office is enthusiastic about his candidacy. Notably, as per Charania, LeBron James, who co-hosts the Mind the Game podcast with Redick, has not been involved in discussions about hiring him.

Redick’s potential transition to coaching mirrors Pat Riley’s early career, where Riley worked as a broadcaster for the Lakers before becoming an assistant coach under Paul Westhead.

The Lakers famously replaced Westhead with Riley in 1981, initiating the “Showtime” era. Riley coached the Lakers to four championships from 1981 to 1990 before moving on to coach the New York Knicks and Miami Heat, eventually transitioning to a front-office role.

Unlike Riley, Redick has not expressed interest in starting as an assistant coach. He is already a prominent basketball analyst, and his podcast network has gained significant recognition. Moving from media to anything less than a head coaching position would not be a prudent career move, especially given the lucrative salaries for top media personalities.

Nevertheless, Redick appears eager to explore coaching. He previously interviewed with the Charlotte Hornets before they hired Boston Celtics assistant Charles Lee. Redick has openly shared his longing for the competitive atmosphere of the locker room.

“I miss the action, the competition, the leadership, being part of a team,” Redick said on the Road Trippin’ podcast. “You miss the high that comes from winning a road game, the camaraderie in the locker room. Coaching involves many of the aspects I miss about playing.”

Taking over the Lakers would be a high-pressure role, particularly with LeBron James nearing his 40th birthday. However, leading a team featuring one of the greatest players in NBA history could be an enticing challenge for Redick.
