Veteran Scout Rips Bronny James: ‘Not An NBA Prospect’

Bronny James, NBA Draft
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Bronny James had a challenging freshman season at USC and is not garnering much support as he prepares for the NBA Draft.

The son of the NBA’s all-time leading scorer declared for the draft last month, despite averaging fewer than five points per game with the Trojans. He can still choose to return to college.

His performance may have been affected by the cardiac arrest he suffered last summer. Before that, he was a McDonald’s All-American in his senior year of high school.

NBA DRAFT NEWS & RUMORS: Bronny James Updates

James scored 13 points in a scrimmage at the NBA Scouting Combine earlier this week, but the showing has not convinced many scouts.

ESPN’s Marc Spears shared notes from two scouts about James, and the feedback was not positive.

One scout said, “If the Lakers don’t draft him, I don’t see anyone drafting him. Teams might want him on a two-way contract, but I doubt Klutch, his agency, would agree to that.”

Another scout was even more critical.

“He’s a positional athlete who doesn’t perform as an elite one. He’s stuck between two positions. He should be a point guard given his size, but he can’t run an offense. He’s also limited as an undersized shooting guard because he can’t shoot. His comparison is a poor man’s Davion Mitchell. In my opinion, he’s not an NBA prospect.”

Davion Mitchell, a backup point guard for the Sacramento Kings, averaged 15.3 minutes and 5.3 points per game this season.

In his freshman season, James played 25 games, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

James measured 6 feet, 1.5 inches at the NBA Scouting Combine, although he was listed at 6 feet, 4 inches at USC.

NBA DRAFT NEWS & RUMORS: Bronny James Updates

Reports suggest that the Lakers, the team his father plays for, might draft James if it helps keep LeBron on the team. The draft takes place two days before LeBron’s deadline to opt out of his contract.
