Monday night was a special one at Madison Square Garden, as NBA fans got to witness history. New York Knicks shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo had one of the hottest shooting nights of the season, resulting in some franchise history being set.

DiVincenzo knocked down 11 3-pointers in the game, en route to a career-high 40 points. That broke the single-game record for 3-pointers, which was held previously by J.R. Smith and Evan Fournier with 10.

Coincidentally, it was Fournier, who is now on the Detroit Pistons, who was attempting to keep DiVincenzo from breaking the record. He was determined to set it, as one of his 3-pointers earlier in the game was wiped off the board after a video review.

NBA NEWS & SCORES: Monty Williams, Donte DiVincenzo, Josh Hart Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks Updates

Being on the wrong end of a record-breaking performance is not where an NBA team wants to be. After the game, Pistons’ head coach Monty Williams expressed that, seemingly taking shots at the Knicks in the process.

Williams’s comments got back to the Knicks locker room post-game, and rebuttals were made. One of the players to fire back was Josh Hart, who recorded his sixth triple-double of the season in the 124-99 victory.

Hart naturally stood up for his team and how his teammates played to the final whistle. He fired back with some scathing comments of his own, saying if the Pistons don’t like it, they should have tried harder to stop it.

“If he didn’t want to be part of the story, he should’ve told his guys to defend better. What else there to say? We’ve got a guy that’s hot. We’re going to try to find the guy that’s hot. That’s common sense in basketball,” Hart said in response to Williams’ comments.

The comments Williams made are likely a culmination of what has been a brutal season in the Motor City. The Pistons have the worst record in the NBA and have suffered more than their fair share of lopsided losses this season.

Having starters on the court late into a blowout is nothing new for the Knicks under Tom Thibodeau. He rarely calls the dogs off early, as he is going to coach to the final whistle, just as he expects his players to execute and play until there are zeros on the clock.
