One of the more surprising things during the 2023-24 NBA regular season for the New York Knicks has been their performances against the Detroit Pistons. One of the worst teams in the NBA, the Knicks haven’t had easy victories over Detroit.

In their last meeting, a missed call from the referees helped New York come on top as a scramble drill resulted in a game-winning layup from Josh Hart. In the middle of that controversy was Donte DiVincenzo, who looked to tackle Ausar Thompson near the sideline for a loose ball, but the referees let them play on.

On Monday night, the teams faced off for the first time since the late-game referee gaffe. This time, it was again DiVincenzo who was the center of attention. But, this time, it was for as good of a reason as any.

In the Knicks’ 124-99 blowout victory, DiVincenzo had a historic night. He scored a career-high 40 points, which included a record 11-three point makes. That puts him alone in first place for made 3-pointers in a single game in Knicks history, breaking the tie held by J.R. Smith and Evan Fournier with 10.

Fittingly, the record-breaking make came against Fournier. He was matched up against DiVincenzo late in the game and the Pistons looked determined to not allow him to make history against them. But, he shook free and knocked down his 11th 3-pointer.

Had the Pistons played defense with that level of intensity the entire night, they may not have lost the game by 25 points. It was yet another wire-to-wire victory for New York, their 12th of the season, which leads the NBA.

It was a special night for DiVincenzo, who thought he had tied the record in the third quarter. But, upon video review, it was determined that he had stepped out of bounds, negating one of his makes. He would eventually get the record and found time to make some jokes at the expense of Jalen Brunson during his post-game interview on the court.

This isn’t the last time DiVincenzo will be recognized for making some history. He is closing in on another Knicks 3-point shooting record, this time the single-season mark. Already with a career-high 234 makes and counting, he is only seven behind first place, which is held currently by Fournier.

Fournier made 241 3-pointers, setting the record during the 2021-22 season, his first with the Knicks. With how well DiVincenzo has shot the ball this season, and the number of attempts he has been averaging since injuries ravaged the roster, it shouldn’t take too long for him to move into first place.
