The New Orleans Pelicans delivered a powerful statement during Friday’s NBA action, winning decisively 111-88 over the Miami Heat.

The game was highly anticipated as it was the first encounter between the two teams since a previous matchup saw tempers flare and players ejected. CJ McCollum led the Pelicans with an impressive 30 points, supported by Jose Alvarado’s 17 points, debunking any doubts about New Orleans’ prowess on the court.

“It backfired on them today,” Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado said.

This performance marked McCollum’s fifth 30-point game of the season, highlighting his crucial role in the team’s success. Despite a quiet night from Zion Williamson, who scored just four points, the Pelicans’ team effort showcased their depth and ability to dominate even without top performances from their stars.

“They were packing the paint and staying in the zone,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “And I would have, too.”

The victory was even more significant considering Brandon Ingram’s injury-related absence. Although his presence on the court was missed, the team rallied to fill the gap, demonstrating their resilience and collective strength.

“We’re going to miss him, 20 points per game, he’s leading our team in assists, so we’re definitely going to miss him,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “But we’re grateful that it wasn’t more than what it was. … We’re going to miss him. The next guys just have to step up.”

The Heat struggled to find their rhythm, particularly from beyond the arc, shooting a dismal 13 for 47 on three-point attempts. The absence of key players due to injuries further hampered their efforts, highlighting the team’s challenges in maintaining consistency and competitiveness.

“We just have not been good enough. We all know that. We’re aware of it,” Spoelstra said.
