NBA insider Shams Charania, reporting for The Athletic and Stadium, has revealed that Donovan Mitchell, the standout player for the Cleveland Cavaliers, continues to grapple with discomfort in his left knee.

Despite undergoing a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to address a bone bruise in his left knee, the All-Star remains unable to perform at his desired level.

Initially, there was optimism within the Cavaliers organization regarding Mitchell’s recovery. Head coach JB Bickerstaff had expressed confidence that Mitchell would return to full strength following the PRP injection, as conveyed to NBA reporters on March 5.

However, Mitchell’s progress has been hindered, compounded by a nasal fracture sustained during a match against the Houston Rockets on March 16. Consequently, Mitchell underwent a medical procedure, with a re-evaluation slated for the upcoming week.

This setback comes at a critical juncture for Mitchell, who has been an integral part of the Cavaliers’ roster this season. Averaging impressive stats of 27.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game, Mitchell has been a force to reckon with on the court, shooting at 46.8% from the field, 37.3% from three-point range, and 86.2% from the free-throw line. His performance ranks him sixth in the NBA for points per game.

Beyond his current challenges, Mitchell’s contractual situation adds another layer of intrigue. With a player option valued at $37 million for the 2025-26 season, Mitchell faces a pivotal decision regarding his future with the Cavaliers. Should he opt out, he would become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2025.

Hailing from New York, Mitchell boasts impressive career statistics, having played for both the Utah Jazz and the Cavaliers. With career averages of 24.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.3 blocks, Mitchell has consistently showcased his talent on the court, including a remarkable career-high of 71 points scored in a single game against the Chicago Bulls last season.

Despite Donovan Mitchell’s absence or limited participation, the Cleveland Cavaliers have maintained a commendable record this season, standing at 43-26 and securing the third position in the Eastern Conference standings.

As the regular season progresses, Cleveland is poised to enter the playoffs, currently positioned to face the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 2024 postseason.
