The 2023-24 NBA regular season has not featured the kind of performance we have become accustomed to seeing from the Golden State Warriors. After losing on Monday night to the New York Knicks, their odds of landing a top-six seed are minuscule, at best.

The Warriors are likely ticketed for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament, as they have fallen into 10th place in the Western Conference with the loss. It was a tough one for Golden State, who had their entire rotation healthy and were facing a Knicks team in the middle of a road trip and lost OG Anunoby to an elbow injury again.

Already without NBA All-Star Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson, New York seemed ripe for the taking. Instead, they brought it to the Warriors right from the opening tip, as they had their 11th wire-to-wire victory of the season, which leads the league.

The Knicks’ entire starting five scored in double-figures as Steve Kerr’s group had no answers defensively. They were picked apart by Jalen Brunson, who scored 34 and Miles McBride, who started in place of Anunoby and scored a career-high 29.

The Warriors had three players score in double-figures off their bench, led by Trayce Jackson-Davis with 19. Stephen Curry led the way with 27, but it was far from his best night as McBride gave him fits all evening.

The loss drops Golden State’s record to 35-32 on the season, as they are now closer to the 11th seed than the 6th. Most concerning about this performance is that their struggles at home have continued.

The Warriors are now 17-18 at Chase Center, a place that used to be a nightmare for visitors to play. Last season, Golden State lost only eight times at home, going 33-8 with an 11-30 record on the road.

During the 2023-24 NBA season, that has basically been flipped. Golden State is now a better team on the road, going 18-14 to this point. Their success on the road is something that could give the team confidence heading down the stretch of the season, as they are capable of going into anyone’s arena and winning a game.

However, as currently constituted, it is hard to consider the Warriors legitimate contenders for the NBA Championship. Unless Curry is playing lights out and at an MVP level, this is an average team, at best.
