In the wake of a disappointing loss to the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell expressed his decision to take an indefinite leave from the court to focus on healing his still-achy knee. This decision comes after the NBA superstar tried to return, only to realize his knee wasn’t as ready as he thought.

“I will give you some news,” Mitchell said. “I’m probably not playing next game to be honest with you. Just gotta take some time to rest and get it right. I thought I was ready. I’m not. It sucks. I want to be out there. But it’s clear as day. Even to myself. I can’t fool myself. Just get it right and be ready when that time comes.”

Mitchell’s struggle with his left knee began following a platelet-rich plasma injection intended to treat a bone bruise that sidelined him for seven games, during which the Cavs posted a 3-4 record.

Mitchell’s return was short-lived, and his performance against the Rockets was far from his best. He emphasized the difficulty of executing routine tasks, whether driving to the rim or playing help defense. His message after the game emphasized the importance of proper healing.

“I mean, no disrespect to some guys, but I’m not really blowing by people right now,” Mitchell said. “That’s disappointing to me. That’s affecting me. On my drives. Even on defensive help. This is just something I’ve never experienced so understanding that you have to build the confidence back up and then sometimes there’s a pain there.

“The one thing we don’t have time for is rest but that’s what you need is rest. Sit my a– down and take the proper approach because at the end of the day it’s April that we are getting ready for,” Mitchell continued. “Tried to hide it as much as I can. But it’s pretty blatant and obvious. It sucks. I’m p—– off. But I trust these guys. Gonna go out there and do their thing. I will get right. And then be ready to go.”

As the Cavaliers face a crucial stretch in their schedule, Mitchell’s absence raises concerns about the team’s performance in the run-up to the playoffs. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff and the rest of the team are tasked with compensating for the loss of one of their leading scorers, emphasizing the need for collective effort and adaptability.

“He wants to be out there with his guys. He wants to fight and give himself an opportunity to see if he can help us win games. He is a tough dude. He plays through a lot,” Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said of Mitchell. “I don’t want to speak out of school on this one. Donovan is giving it what he’s got. He’s trying to go out, play and compete.”
