In a game marked by its defensive prowess rather than offensive flare, the Philadelphia 76ers overcame the New York Knicks with a score of 79-73 on Sunday night, recording the lowest points total in the NBA this season. This encounter, described as an “ugly opener” of a two-game series, showcased both teams’ struggle on the offensive end but highlighted their defensive efforts.

“Any defensive coach would take that quarter,” Buddy Hield said. “Offensively, no, but we got great possessions … and we figured out a way to weather the storm and we made plays when we needed to make plays.”

The game’s slow pace was underscored by the historical context; not since a game in March 2019 had the NBA seen such a low-scoring first half. However, the 76ers managed to break their three-game losing streak thanks to contributions from Hield, who scored 16 points, and Paul Reed, who added 13.

The 76ers faced the challenge without key players Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, significantly impacting their scoring potential. Yet, their defense compensated, limiting the Knicks to a mere 32.5% shooting from the field.

“We were sending a lot of people at him and he was having to work really hard to get into the paint, and we weren’t letting him get there that often,” 76ers coach Nick Nurse said of guarding Brunson.

Josh Hart of the Knicks reflected on the team’s performance, particularly highlighting the issues with turnovers.

“Obviously, we didn’t shoot the ball well,” Hart said. “Turnovers were bad, I think I had six or seven myself, but you’ve just got to try to flush it.”

The game also witnessed tension in the fourth quarter, leading to a technical foul scenario involving players from both teams. This intensity underscored the competitive nature of the matchup despite the low scores.
