Heat Trade Proposal Lands Dejounte Murray From Hawks

Let’s be honest – this year’s NBA trade deadline was a dud. It was boring. This was a buyer’s market. As a result, sellers were skeptical about selling.

Look at the Atlanta Hawks. They were widely expected to move Dejounte Murray. Here we are, and Murray is still on the roster. It seems the Hawks didn’t get an offer they were satisfied with in exchange for Murray.

That doesn’t mean that they won’t move him this summer. The Hawks will assess their roster after the season is over. If they’re unsatisfied with it, could they send Murray to the Miami Heat?

Atlanta Hawks Receive: G/F Duncan Robinson, G/F Caleb Martin, 2029 First-Round Pick (MIA), 2030 First-Round Pick (Swap – MIA)

Miami Heat Receive: G Dejounte Murray

There are other reasons why the deadline was quiet. This year, we saw some major deals go through before the day came. The biggest deals of the year happened before the deadline.

The Heat were part of one of them. They acquired Terry Rozier from the Charlotte Hornets. This was one of the biggest acquisitions of the year. How has it looked for the Heat thus far?

So far, the return has been mixed. The Heat have been inconsistent since acquiring Rozier. Should they add Murray if they don’t meet expectations this year?

Why The Miami Heat Do The Deal

Some will question our logic here. Rozier is best with the ball. So is Murray. We’ve been watching Murray fail to mesh with Trae Young. Why would this be any different?

Well, Rozier is not Young. This is not a heliocentric superstar. Rozier is a more willing off-ball player. This could work. If nothing else, the Heat would be gambling on pure talent.

With a backcourt of Rozier and Murray alongside a frontcourt featuring Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, the Heat could overwhelm opponents with playmaking.

Sure, they’ll have to replace Robinson. The Heat can find an affordable floor spacer even if he can’t replace Robinson’s steadily developing playmaking. Should the Hawks want Robinson?

Why The Atlanta Hawks Do The Deal

When the Hawks acquired Murray, there were questions about his fit with Young. The Hawks haven’t been able to answer in the affirmative. So far, the duo has been questionable on the floor together.

The Hawks kept Murray at the deadline. If they’re disappointed with the outcome of 2023-24, they’ll re-explore possibilities. It wouldn’t come as a shock if Murray was on the trade block again this summer.

This would likely be his market value. The Hawks are getting an unprotected first and a swap here. They’re also getting two valuable role players who fit alongside Young. Murray was safe at the deadline, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be safe for long.
