Kyle Lowry Gets Hornets Buyout, Signs With Sixers

Kyle Lowry agreed to a contract buyout with the Charlotte Hornets, opening a path for him to join the Philadelphia 76ers for the remainder of the 2023-24 NBA season, according to what his agent, Mark Bartelstein from Priority Sports, as ESPN reported on Saturday.

After he clears waivers on Monday, Lowry will sign a $2.8 million contract to join the 76ers for the remainder of the season. Lowry has been selected for the All-Star game six times and has always aspired to play for his hometown team.

Lowry, a Cardinal Dougherty High School graduate, and Villanova University alum will join the Sixers for a playoff campaign under his former coach, Nick Nurse.

According to ESPN, the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans were among the teams interested in Lowry after his buyout. However, the prospect of realizing his dream to play for the 76ers was an opportunity he couldn’t overlook.

Lowry was traded to the Hornets last month from Miami as part of the Terry Rozier deal, and it was mutually agreed that he would remain inactive until after the trade deadline. Before the buyout with the Hornets, Lowry was due $10.6 million of his $29.7 million contract for the 2023-24 season.

Following the trade deadline, Lowry is expected to contribute to a Sixers team that has recently been reshaped, including the addition of guard Buddy Hield.
