According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid will undergo surgery on his left knee to address a meniscus injury.
Embiid is expected to miss an extended period of time, but the reigning MVP could play again this season.
“Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid — the reigning league MVP — will undergo a procedure to address a left meniscus injury in the coming days, the team announced on Sunday night, and the ‘door isn’t closed’ on a return this season, sources told ESPN,” Woj wrote. “Embiid is expected to miss an extended period of time, but a more precise timeline isn’t expected until doctors complete the procedure, sources said.”
Embiid is averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.8 blocks this season while shooting 53.3% from the field, 36.6% from beyond the arc and 88.3% from the free-throw line. He leads the NBA in points per game.

Embiid will not win his second MVP this season since he will fall short of the NBA’s 65-game minimum to earn postseason awards. The future Hall of Famer has been dealing with left knee soreness all season, according to NBA insider Sam Amick of The Athletic.
Embiid missed the first two years of his career with foot issues. He’s had several knee injuries in his career before this latest injury.
The Sixers are 30-18. They are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. If Embiid doesn’t return for the 2024 playoffs, Philadelphia will not compete for a title.
